Movies

As the Crypt art collection covers all periods from the Middle Age to the recent era, it seems only fair to include modern art forms like movies.

“Katherine of Alexandria”

Michael Redwood (GB) 2014

The movie mixes Catharina's legend with the political conflict between the Roman co-emperors Maxentius and Constantinus. The production was delayed considerably because of financial problems. The final movie version suffered extensive cuts. The pictures below are from a pre-final version. Here Catharina suffers various tortures; so she is tied to a wheel and suspended in public, and in the ends has all her bones broken with a spiked roller.

The (new) execution scene is here: movie clip (MP4 format, 69 MB)

In the final version, Catharina is executed by first binding, then nailing her to a wheel and dropping her from a height.
