In 1713 more than 100 ”new Christians” (= converted Jews) were deported from Rio de Janeiro to Lisbon, where they were tried by the Inquisition for practising their old religion. Among them was the family of the dramatist António José da Silva Coutinho, who was a child at that time.
Fortunately, his mother was only tortured and then set free.
He was tortured by the Inquisition as a young man, but survived. In 1739, however, he was strangled and burned at an auto-da-fé after a final clash with the Inquisition.
